SO we are praying non-stop this week, and joining with us are members of the Jacob's Well, St. Chiara, and Servants communities. We pray here this week, then on to pray with the Servants in their location, then Jacob's Well the following week, and finally St. Chiara's the last week. This is a great chance for us to unite in prayer and intercession for our neighbourhood and our world.

Dreams of Prayer

I had a dream the other night.

In it I held an envelope. I don't know what was in the envelope, but it was full. On the outside, I wrote the words: "It is time for us to start praying for real again."

Once I had written that, I felt in my dream such a sense of relief, safety, and direction.

I am open to interpretations, but my initial feeling is an excitement over renewing an emphasis on intentional, communal prayer that is our hub, the place out of which direction and comfort and strength comes for us.

Oh Goodness, lots.
I think my problem is I hear well and often - but I share it seldom. More out of fear then paitence.

LOVE. We need to love. We need to love God and all he requires. We need to love eachother - oh how we need to love eachother. We need to love the lost. LOVE.

1 Kings and some Revelation 2 and 3 have been in my prayers for the past few months.

301 East Hastings

For Kids Cell last week we made crosses out of sticks on the ground, and then went and visited 301 East Hastings, the ancient home of a Salvation Army Corps. The Corps moved out many years ago, and it has since been owned by a Buddhist Monastery and the Ministry of Health. We are praying about possibly getting it back.

So we went and prayed, and laid our crosses down at the corner of the building. A man came walking (stumbling, really) along, and muttered "The Salvation Army ain't here anymore!" I said actually yes, we were, we were standing right there.

He them told me about how he used to play in the band in that building many yeas ago. He was far from band-shape on this day, but he remembered his time ministering to the LORD with music. In another strange twist, he also turned out to be the estranged father of one of the teens I work with. (I know, it sounds like a soap opera plot, but it did happen.)

Pray that we would have wisdom in looking at this old building as a possible place to live and do community out of, that we would be given favour in the area of finances, and that old relationships and covenants would be restored by the LORD.

I have been hearing the Lord a lot lately - through dreams, and tongues, and interpretations, and visions, and his word. And I have been frustrated at the lack of clarity of it all. Frustrated because I don't understand it, and I don't know who to deliver it too and I don't know what some of it means. Then I heard the voice of the Lord speak

"You are hearing in part"

What are you hearing?
The body hears in part, the fullness of prophecy or encouragement or a warning or a word is done through the fullness of the body. I need everyone else to understand what the spirit is saying. Let he who has an ear hear what the spirit is saying to the Church. Right now it's like an unfinished puzzle - I don't know the end result but I am hopeful for the completion of it.

Family;

Thank you so much for all of your prayers and encouragements.
Our team is still well and at work here in Tijuana. We have been blessed to hold 8 seminars so far, making people aware of the dangers of trafficking and that it does happen. It has been very different learning to communicate these problems and issues to people who are at and exit point, as opposed to a destination point, as we are in Canada. Praise God. He does all things well!
We have been able to walk the streets of the red light about 4 times in the last week and have seen some intense things. It is very difficult for the rest of my team not being able to speak the language and so they can't even talk to the women. We are planning on making it out a few more times this week. Please pray for safety. Last night I was talking to a young girl who must have been about 15 and a couple of men ended up following us around after that.
Praise God he is a shield of protection around us.

Please pray for our health. We can see how the enemy is trying to stop us. One girl on our team had food poisoning and was taken to the hospital. The last couple of days I've had a sore throat and today It hurts to talk, but I am the only one who can communicate for my team, so I will continue.
Please pray for the people in the town of La Gloria, where the children's care center is. La Gloria is very close to the Federal Prison and in the last couple days there have been a few escaped prisoners, so the city is in a bit of an uproar. Military presence everywhere.
Please pray for the safety of the people here in Tijuana. Four days ago a lady found an abandoned car with a bag of money and the bodies of two young children missing their organs and eye balls. There is also a lot of gang violence at the moment. 17 people were killed in one day last week.
Please pray for the continued provision of the Lord for the hard working captains here in Tijuana.
Please pray for my husband and his faithful ministry to the men in the downtown-eastside of Vancouver.

Prayer Request

On August 4/08 we sent around a prayer request relating to Captain Lisa Macpherson's (New WEstminster) cousin Kelly who has a rare autoimmune liver disease.

We have received an update excerpts of which we can pass on to you for further prayer:

"Kelly's biopsy Monday brought on acute pancreatitis.......we were told last Tuesday that the Cancer has moved outside of the liver to the portal vein; as a result the transplant and any surgery is now not an option. Palliative Chemo is where we have been directed. We are praying for a quick turn around in pathology since the Oncologist won't see Kelly until he gets the results of the tissue samples taken....
Kelly is adamant that God be glorified in all of these circumstances. She absolutely shines with His radiance! She trusts and knows His faithfulness." (husband)

Please pray for her husband and 4 children during this incredibly difficult time that healing in the various ways God can achieve will be answered for this family.

Prayer Requests from Zimbabwe

Here are some news and prayer requests from the SA in Zimbabwe, in response to the letter from one of our friends in Canada. Please join in prayer for that troubled place:

"Thanks for communicating. It actually reduce some stress when you read from a friend. Thanks too for those tears, I believe God will have mercy on this land, because we have seen a terrible manifestation of disasters openly these days.

We have proposed several times to our leader here to call The Salvation Army to a week of prayer or "National Day for Repentance" but usually no response. We are really disturbed. If you have seen recent news from CNN, those are real and true.

Few heart breaking stories.

One of our Soldiers in Nyamande Corps, who recently put to birth a baby girl had nothing to eat, so she went to a maize harvested land to pick the left overs. She actually did under an intensed heat, keeping the baby some distance away. After pick some, she decided to roast few to make the first day meal. Unfortunately, the fire went wild and everywhere started to burn. She decided to leave the maize and run for the baby to save her. Guess what? She fell into the fire and got burnt while the baby was burnt to death. She could not rescue the baby nor herself. She was rushed to the hospital by a good samaritan who saw her and came to her rescue, while we buried the baby few days ago. She is still in the hospital which is now on strike too!

2. A hungry boy of about 5 years within our Area (Domboshawa) also went to get a wild fruit (Acha) which has become some form of food these days for those in rural areas. Unfortunately, this fruit is one of Donkeys' favourite. He tried to drive away the hungry donkey who was also looking for food, but the animal will not move. In the cause of trying harder, the animal kicked him and he died instantly.

There are many more, but this is happening where we are. We feel for our soldiers who we cannot help nor do anything than praying and asking for God's intervention.

I shall be leaving on Monday, but I know that I can read my mails in the States. Iam yet to hear from Ian Swan. Maybe he wrote through THQ (SA protocols) but I would have love to help myself directly if possible.

Do take care of yourself and may God continue to be with you and John.

Noble Things

A warrior was praying today in The War Room, and he heard Isaiah 32 from the LORD:

"See, a king will reign in righteousness, and princes will rule with justice.
Each will be like a hiding place from the wind, a covert from the tempest, like streams of water in a dry place, like the shade of a great rock in a weary land.
Then the eyes of those who have sight will not be closed, and the ears of those who have hearing will listen.
The minds of the rash will have good judgment, and the tongues of the stammerers will speak readily and distinctly.
A fool will no longer be called noble, nor a villain said to be honourable.
For fools speak folly, and their minds plot iniquity: to practice ungodliness, to utter error concerning the LORD, to leave the craving of the hungry unsatisfied, and to deprive the thirsty of drink.

Vigil and Fast

We're spending a few nights outside this week for Canada's Homelessness Week. It is a vigil in the sense that people will always be on the lawn in front of City Hall this week, and a fast for those who choose to participate, in order to stand in solidarity with the homeless and the hungry.

This morning we prayed out James 1 together, focusing on "pure religion". we walked around City Hall carrying signs and praying. Then a group from Servants enacted a justice tableau while Dave Diewart from Streams of Justice read out some demands for housing.

It is cold and wet outside, but I have a warm sleeping bag, a nice pillow, warm clothes, and the option of leaving for my home whenever I want. It is not true incarnation or identification, but it is a symbol of solidarity, and a recognition that our faith lives and our prayer lives must include the vulnerable in our midst.

I stood outside the throne room, shaking and trembling knowing I had to go in, but fearful of what might happen. As a little child would, I peered around the corner, keeping my body safe on the other side, ready to run if I had to. Tears were unstoppable as I tried to see, I leaned my back against the wall and sank down, crying. Then Christ came and covered me in blood, and my fear turned into BOLDNESS (which really is HOLY FEAR) then in boldness I arose. I walked to the throne, taking every step with confidence, keeping my eyes forward, yet shaking and trembling more and more the closer and closer I got....

...and the closer and closer I got the more afraid I was - I wanted to run back - but my new found boldness and confidence told me otherwise. Finally I couldn't take it anymore, to my knees I fell and my head was down - in awe of his beauty and in awe of him.

Because of Christ, we can approach the throne of Grace with boldness.

That was from last Thursday in PTB we were led in the Theophony prayers.

Today we were led by Carlye in Lectio Devina on Psalm 50. The Holy Spirit spoke to me saying "God appears in Radiance" and "Covenant by sacrifice"

So Tuesday mornings in Pray The Bible [PTB for those who are cool enough] the theme is Lectio Divina [spelling please?!?!]. Todays verse was from Psalm 91, and this is what I saw:I saw a mighty warrior dressed in full uniform. With a presence of more then one soul, like the united body of Salvationists. He was walking really, really slow through a valley in darkness. The ground was totally covered with bodies. Broken bodies, people crying out, people trying to reach up and grab at the Warrior. And as He was walking through He was sprinkling dust on the bodies and one by one the bodies began to rise. And when He turned back there was a garden growing behind Him where He had sprinkled that 'dust'. Slowly, the further through the valley the Warrior got the easier it became for Him to work and it felt like a huge burden was starting to be lifted from Him. Then in the distance it was like the sun was beginning to rise, and people were starting to rise up before the Warrior got to them. They started to get up on their own and then they started to get other people up...and it didn't take long before the sun was becoming visible and when the Warrior looked behind and infront there was garden all around. And the burden seemed to be lifted and the work became lighter. Almost like a fragrance of dancing was in the air.It was actually incredibly intense...when the Warrior was in the darkness the work seemed so so heavy and burdening and almost overwhelming. Like He was walking through mud. But the feeling when the garden had grown on all sides was so liberating. almost breath taking!So...this is what I saw! Hope that the things that are from God stick, and the things that aren't fall off like dust.Amen!

I had a War Room shift tonight and I guess the Lord took me on a little bit of a journey. We visited some places of the past, current places and emotions, and the places yet to come (both personally and corporately). There were ups, there were downs, some of these places were great moments of victory while others were times of defeat, emotions included love, hate, joy and sorrow - but the one constant through it all was HIS presence.

"We can NEVER escape from your presence" Psalm 139

And now, I am still here in TWR, my shift officially ends in 20 minutes and I don't want it to. I don't want to leave - I am really enjoying the Presence of God and as such do not want to leave it, and if I could I would stay forever...

...the reality is - I CAN STAY FOREVER, actually I don't have a choice in the matter, for I can never escape the Presence of God - the challenge though is recognising it (and honoring it) outside of this place, recognising Him in our lives, in each other, our neighbours, the poor.

It is also in recognising His presence in our daily living, and honoring Him, things like Salvation, Repentance, Sanctification, Holiness and Joy would be on the rise.

Lord, open our eyes, give us Kingdom eyes to see you. Oh Lord, we want to recognise you in our daily living, in our coming and our going.

How are you all doing?

Well I have prayer request, can you Please pray for India. As you know from last couple of weeks there is lots of attacks on Christian people’s, on Church’s and also on the Children’s home. And I heard that from last 2 week some of the Hindu religion people (Bajrang Dal and RSS, two of the main groups) are walking around our Children’s Home and Church and also they visited my family and tried to grab some information. They are planning something and My dad submitted a application in Police Station for the protection of Children’s in Children’s Home.

So We request you to join us to Pray for the protection over Children’s and all the Christian believers back in India. Please pray that their eyes will be open and they will see believe that Jesus Christ our saviour and they will turn toward HIM.

Peace Prayers

What a privilege last night to kick off our week of non-stop prayer (and our new community rhythm of prayer) by spending several hours praying with a bunch of warriors for peace.

We set up the room for the week, then began in silence, intentionally acknowledging that God was inviting us into HIS presence, not the other way around, and we wanted Him to have the first word.

We then spent some time focusing on and declaring the names of Yahweh, the name we will be honouring in all of our prayers. The first name was Prince of Peace, and today we are honouring Yahweh as Immanuel - God with us.

We moved on to a discussion of peace, and that which robs us of our peace. Peace is not the absence of war, it is the presence of justice and shalom (ht MLK Jr).

After this we used our giant map of the DTES to pray peace into the lives of our friends and neighbours. What we pray we must be ready to enact as well.

We moved then into a time of reflection on the Sermon on the Mount, with the theme that Jesus' nonviolence does not mean passivity. Cowardice and non-involvement are the only options completely unavailable to the non-violent followers of Jesus.

Lastly we spent some time educating ourselves on the major conflicts currently raging in the world today. We prayed and mourned.

Praying in the Wilderness...

Had a great time this last week with some fellow warriors out in Sasquatch Provincial Park (and out in the torrential rain) living and laughing and praying. We prayed the Psalms together, mostly ones having to do with the peace of Israel and the blessings of family.

What grace, what sheer gift is family, both children and the extended family of community. The kingdom of God is meant to be a family. A couple of times on the camping trip we heard words to the effect of: "Wow, this is just like camping with my family, only without the yelling," or: "Wow, this is just like camping with my family, yelling included, but without the booze."

Life is messy. Family is messy. Prayer should be messy (not always pretty). Camping is certainly messy.

And the members of the Peace Camp at Oppenheimer Park, those who were being threatened with tickets and the thrashing of their stuff, were all given places to live by BC Housing. This is a huge victory! Praise God!

Dear Friends:

The article below is good overall. However, I need to clarify that I disagree with Saunders' statements in which she says that she doesn't care about so-called discreet bordello prostitution featuring adult women. Why should there be any social sanction of a male right to sexually access women on demand? Just because some women may choose to prostitute doesn't mean that prostitution isn't oppressive, abusive, and harmful not only to the women prostuting but also to all women (there's a great article on this subject by Rebecca Whisnat called "Confronting pornography: Some conceptual basics").

Moreover, toleration of any kind of adult sex market only rolls out the welcome mat for other forms of the sex industry, including those that exploit children. You can't have legal adult prostitution markets without the existence and proliferation of commercial sexual exploitation of children in that same market.

Pimps, Pedophiles: Welcome to S.F.

A quick reading of the measure that will go before San Francisco voters in November to decriminalize prostitution easily could leave you with the misimpression that the measure is an exercise in fairness that demands that prosecutors go after men who abuse prostitutes and implement policies "to reduce institutional violence and discrimination against prostitutes." A careful reading of the initiative, "Enforcement of Laws Related to Prostitution and Sex Workers," however, shows a measure that shields child prostitution and traffickers of human beings.

"If I had just heard from the proponents, I would probably vote for it myself," said the Rev. Glenda Hope, whose San Francisco Network Ministries helped found the Tenderloin AIDS Resource, in the mistaken belief the measure is meant "to protect women." But as the executive director of SafeHouse, a residential center that helps women get off the streets, Hope knows too much.

Hope knows that the average age of entry into prostitution is 12 to 14. The office of San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris, who opposes the initiative, has encountered prostituted children as young as 9 years old.

Yet the San Francisco ballot measure completely ignores the prostitution of children. The measure simply states, "Law enforcement agencies shall not allocate any resources for the investigation and prosecution of prostitutes for prostitution." Astonishingly, there's no exemption that encourages police to enforce the law for minors.

If the measure passes, the city is likely to become an international haven for pimps who peddle girls and boys, and perverts seeking sex with minors.

And where does that leave Bay Area youth? "They want new and young," Jasmine, a former teen prostitute from Oakland who now volunteers for the nonprofit SAGE Project, which fights sexual exploitation, explained to me.

The life, which she entered at age 14, was "like a drug." She felt wanted. She brought in $4,000 to $5,000 a week. Sure, she knew girls who were selling themselves against their will. But she could buy things. "I was supposedly involved in a relationship" -- one that ended when police prosecuted her pimp.

The other big problem: The measure prohibits city law enforcement from applying for grants to prosecute human traffickers. That's right, this measure gives a free pass to the human sex-slave trade -- in a city that is a central stop for international sex-trade rings.

A proponent of the measure told Fox News that she believes that it will pass with 75 percent of the vote because the city is "sex-positive."

The SAGE Project's Allen Wilson fears that the measure may prevail because the city has no shortage of rootless residents who "will vote for this because they think it's cool." For them, San Francisco is "one big sandbox."

Let me be clear. I don't want city cops wasting their time prosecuting workers at the discreet bordello that hires healthy adult prostitutes who get regular medical checkups. I would rather see law enforcement focus on serious crimes.

But there is nothing broad-minded about looking the other way when 14-year-old girls and boys sell themselves on the street and massage parlors are staffed by women who are being held against their will. These are not consenting adults.

The measure takes a tone that suggests it will protect women by demanding that San Francisco law enforcement prosecute "coercion, extortion, battery, rape and violent crimes, regardless of the victim's status as a sex worker."

Of course, state law already requires that. More to the point, battery, rape, assault and even murder are crimes that befall prostitutes because they work in an inherently dangerous field bankrolled largely by men who like to demean women and girls.

Violence and pain are the inevitable outcome for those steeped in this dehumanizing way of life. Young women wooed into the life quickly age to the point where they cannot net the high-incomes their pimps demand. They become addicted to drugs. They learn to commit new crimes. Until the day they find they are disposable.

Or as Wilson noted, "We treat animals better."

So do not tell Jasmine that if San Francisco decriminalizes prostitution, it will do so because the city cares about prostitutes. This measure really is a gift, not so much to so-called sex workers, as to pimps, pedophiles and human traffickers. As Jasmine sees it, if the ballot initiative passes, "That's basically saying the city does not care."

All Night of Prayer

Last night we had an all night of prayer. From 10pm Friday night until 6am the following morning a bunch of us got together and prayed, sung, danced, lamented, and did some chalk prophecy too.

Each hour had a different focus.

At 10pm we were led in worship. I actually wasn't there for this hour, so perhaps someone else can fill us in on the juicy details.

11pm was Psalms 1-2. I was still at work for this hour, but I'd love to hear some highlights on this one.

12am was God's Identity in the Psalms. Now I rocked up about half way through this hour. When I walked in the room it was evident the Lord was dwelling and there was a lovely blend of people praying over each other. We were digging deep into Psalm 3 "How many are my enemies" "How many rise up against me", and doing some deliverance prayer over each other.

1am was the Psalms of Lament. There was sack cloth and ashes and we followed tradition and placed the ashes on our heads and rend the t-shirt, I mean sack cloth. Then the room was filled with weeping as we prayed and cried together the Psalms of Lament.

At 2am we went out prayer walking. We split into groups, prayer walked for 45 minutes, then came back to debrief and pray.

3am was Justice hour. It began with a bit of shouting style pray the Bible, praying for justice for others followed by writing our own 'Psalm' crying out to the Lord for justice for others.

At 4am we Praised. There were pieces of paper all over the ground with different names of the Lord on them, Prince of Peace, King, Lover, Comforter, Faithful etc. There were also stations to praise the Lord for what he has done and what he is doing. We also did some testifying! Hallelujah.

The final hour was Thanksgiving and Hope. We first cleaned up the room, mostly because lets face it, when 6am rolls around, who wants to stick around to clean. So we thanked God for our night, for our friends and for this space. Then we had 5 intense minutes of Pray the Bible, we were kinda getting sluggish in our prayers, so this 5 intense minutes was to stir us up and to finish strong. Then we were handed out chalk, and told to prophesy hope on places where we see, or others see as Hopeless. The white chalk on the dark places stood out and showed hope. Some places hit were Pubs, Pigeon Park, InSite, and alley ways.

All and all it was a swell night and encourage you all who are local to come out to our next one (maybe during War College Debrief Weeks). Actually, these nights are so fantastic that I encourage you to come out to one even if you're not local - it'd be worth it.

Well-worn paths

Praying the Psalms involves walking well-worn paths of prayer. These are words composed thousands of years ago, and used daily for thousands of years to roll of the tongues of God-believers in acts of prayer, praise, devotion, and love. These are words prayed in times of crises, in times of prosperity, in times of family rejoicing and mourning, throughout all of Christian history and tradition. These were the prayerful words of David, the prophets, Jesus, the apostles, the Desert Fathers, the scholastics, Kings and beggars and saints.

They are also fun to pray because the words are so familiar. Not a Psalm goes by but you will recognise words from songs, catch phrases, sermons, poems, childhood. We prayed Psalm 118 today, and my kids were thrilled because this is our "grace" prayer:

"Give thanks to the LORD for he is good, his love endures forever.

Let Israel say: his love endures forever.

Let the House of Aaron say: his love endures forever.

Let all who fear the LORD say: his love endures forever."

Praying the Psalms with my children has been wonderful. They don't understand everything that is going on, but it is starting to shape their thinking and even their language. The other day my three year old said to me: "The LORD is God right?" He is developing that pattern of speech from our prayers.

I want my speech and my thoughts to be patterned on the word of God, for those rhythms to infect my life, for the syntax and grammar and poetry to become part of my everyday conversations. This can only happen through dedicated meditation and prayer.

I was thinking today of my comrades who are currently preparing themselves to be brides - whether in days, weeks or in the coming months. Naturally, I started thinking of my own marriage & husband and the immensity with which I appreciate and enjoy him as his wife. I felt a bit sad because the Bible doesn't indicate that Jesus was ever married...how much he missed out on I thought to myself, inwardly smiling at all of the bits & pieces that go along with marriage.

Then Holy Spirit reminded me (as She is apt to do) that Jesus is still waiting for His Bride...that she is meant to be making herself ready and preparing herself for the day when He will come for her and they will live together forever.

Let us rejoice and shout for joy [exulting and triumphant]!

Let us celebrate and ascribe to Him glory and honor, for the marriage of the Lamb [at last] has come, and His bride has prepared herself.

Contemplative Prayer

Contemplative Prayer is the process of learning to acknowledge the presence of Christ at all times in one's life. This is not something that happens over night, or at all for most people. But that should not prevent us from making it our life's purpose to know the presence of Christ and to honour him with every part of ourselves.

Some think that this kind of prayer requires that we go off into the wilderness and live in a cave for several years, but it does not. This kind of prayer really should be prayed in the midst of life, in the business of the day to day, with all the concerns of reality pressing in upon us. Because God does not just exist in the ideal, he exists in the real, in the present now, and he is available to us in our full humanity. Hearing the voice of God is certainly possible with the background noise of a babbling brook, but it must also be possible with the background noise of a crying child, a shouting neighbour, a screaming siren. God is not absent there, we just need to train our ears to hear his still small voice.

Today our morning prayers were a little late, as there was a fight going on outside the garden. It was a matter of drug money not being paid off, and one man was set to beat up another man.

What do you do in that case? Do you ignore it, just keep on praying? Do you call the cops, or just assume it's someone else's problem?

We couldn't. We got involved. I don't know how much we helped, and we very nearly got beaten up. I'm also pretty sure we made an enemy of a local dealer who was very upset that we were interfering with his business.

But how can you pray to the God who hates violence while ignoring violence happening a few feet away from you?

One of our guys stood in the way of a rock being thrown at another man. To me, that is living out what we are praying.

So then we prayed: "O LORD, how long will you forget me? Forever? How long will you look the other way?
...
"But I trust in your unfailing love. I will rejoice because you have rescued me. I will sing to the LORD because he is good to me." (parts of Psalm 13)

Hope and trust in the midst of violence and pain.

It also reminded me that I can bring my full humanity before the LORD in prayer, all my fears and even anger. The LORD is the perfect one to hear my true thoughts and feelings, so that He can shape them towards a more perfect imitation of His son.

It's been a while since I've written here, which is not a reflection of my prayer life, just that of my computer life.

The LORD has been speaking to me about His foundations of Righteousness and Justice. Generally I am off balance - diving deep into one, while neglecting the other - or sometimes neglecting both. But that is not the way it should be. The Hebrew word for Righteousness is the same as that for Justice. They co-inside. If you neglect one, you are actually neglecting both. These are foundational - and when we are weak in Righteousness or weak in Justice (or both) then our foundations are weak - and we all know what happened to the house that was built on sinking sand.

We also need to remember that it is God and God alone who is Just and Righteous. This is humility in it's finest. When we bow down, foreheads down, our faces are on his foundation, which is Righteousness and Justice. If we are walking in humility then it should mean we are in constant righteousness and justice.

Praying the Psalms

This summer we will be praying through the Psalms together as our community prayer rhythm. At 9am, 12pm, and 3pm each day everyone, no matter where they are, will stop and pray the set Psalm for that time. This will link us together in prayer, inform our prayers with Scripture, and put us squarely in the Church (and Jewish) tradition of using the Psalms as our prayer book. Pray one Psalm each time, and expand on them as you will. (You might want to keep this schedule in your Bible and check off each day as you go.)

There is also great value in praying together. So for those who are available we will meet in the Community Garden every day at 9am, at Grace Mansions at 12pm, and at the War Room at 3pm so that we can pray the set Psalms together. War Room shifts, L.O.M, Street Combat and Recreate will also be happening, as will a week of non-stop prayer during BTI (July 20-26).

God's Command

The most oft-repeated command in Scripture is not be holy, or be good, or any thou shalt nots. It is "Do not be afraid."

I was hearing that loud and clear last night and this morning in The War Room. "Do not be afraid. Do not measure yourself against anything, do not hate yourself, do not think that I hate you."

God's primary impression towards us is one of love and adoption, not anger and wrath. Anger and wrath come in when harm is committed upon the children of God. So God is angry with sin, with evil, with injustice. His wrath is real. But He loved us before Creation, and he was the lamb that was slain for us before the beginning of the world. Because of that, we need not live in fear of God, as his perfect love drives out all fear. His purposes for us is not punishment, but adoption into his family.

In the Garden

This morning we prayed the Bible in the garden. People chose verse or portions of Scripture that they had memorized, and walked around the garden praying them out to God. Every so often one would go up to another and share his or her verse with them, adding onto each other's prayers.

The garden is coming along nicely, with the radishes already beginning to show themselves. Some of us spent some time praying over the fruit and veggies, declaring life over them. Caitlyn busied herself trying to get the radishes saved.

Speaking of Salvation (and Prayer and Praise) pray for Bill. He came into re:cre8 last night, and then followed a pray'er' up to the War Room and then gave his life to the Lord.

This happened less then 24 hours of non-stop prayer...coincidence - ABSOLUTLY NOT!

Let us share in zeal. Let us share in passion. Let us be unified in our desire for truth. But let us not be right in our own eyes. Let us seek wisdom and be open to reason. Please, let not the change we wish to see be of our own agenda's. Let us not form the Army to look like ourselves, to make it like ourselves but we must be one in this desire "YOUR KINGDOM COME, OH GOD, YOUR WILL BE DONE" and this alone. Don't be conceited. Don't be arrogant. Don't think that you've got it all together or that you have all the answers to the Army's problems. THERE IS ONE, dear children; ONE INDEED. And He knows how we are to look. Like His Son. Driven by His Spirit.

Don't let your selfish ambition get in the way. If we are going to be one, if this change is going to take place it must be one big unified thrust by the true people of God, not a bunch of ideas and ideals made by our own human reason which can only lead to more disunity and chaos. Let this be your motif: Desire for God's Truth, and Zeal for His house. May it consume US just as it did the Christ who after expressing that zeal proclaimed "My Father's house shall be a house of Prayer" In other words, stop building towers, and proclaiming idle opinions and get on your knees and weep for God's Army, weep that His righteousness be manifested deep within. Cry out to Him for His mercy and grace. Become LOW. Understand your desperate need; understand your poverty (for the Kingdom belongs to such as these!). Understand that ALL good things and ideas and wisdom come from the Living God ALONE, understand His holiness in relation to your need for holiness and cry out for HIS good and perfect will and not your own! And in all of this let our ultimate end be in line with HIS ultimate end. That being the glory and the upholding of His name; this is why we should do anything at all.

Listen.

Those of us that desire change in the Salvation Army aren't all in agreement when it comes to doctrine or theology. We don't all agree with each other's way of doing things, this can potentially ruin things for us. Though this grieves me greatly, that is not what I want to focus on this moment. I want us to focus on that one thing we have in common, that desire we have. That desire for change is a manifestation of the groaning that Paul talks about in Romans 8. This desire isn't of us; it comes from our union with Christ. Though our means of grabbing that which we desire may differ, the end is the same. It's a cry that we have within our spirits for God's will to be done; it's something that ALL the people of God share in, not just those in the Army. And it's a cry that we must unleash together; let us not to strive to accomplish it in our own strength. But like babies cry out to Him FOR Him, that He may accomplish what our deepest yearnings call out for, things that have not been seen. I'm talking about hope. The desire for change that we share in is a manifestation of the hope of the people of God. What we need to do is stop tacking our own vision to the hope that we have, I think that's where unhealthy ambition comes from. But we hope for what we do not see and in doing so we wait for it in patience. PATIENCE for what is coming. Faith that it will come. You do well to abide in these things.

So I encourage you to go on in zeal, just as long as you hold fast to the heavenly wisdom expressed in James' epistle. And run in your passion, as long as you delight also in the knowledge that God has provided in His word. Don't put your revelations above scripture, but test everything in the light of scripture. And always always always pray. Don't EVER stop. He will come; He will accomplish what He has promised to His children! So live and breathe and walk in your faith which alone justifies us before Him, and hold fast to the hope to which you were called(a hope that is not seen). Don't grow weary but be fervent in zeal. He was stricken and made low that you may not grow weary. And put on love. Love those that you are unified with in Christ, care and supply for their needs and encourage one another every day. Just as He has loved us, so love one another! Tell of His salvation to the nations that He may be glorified in that Great and Terrible Day!

We worship a Saviour who triumphed over the grave. He defeated death, sin, the devil, sickness, pain, shame and fear forever. That's a big deal.

I am not one who believes that Christians can never get sick or die, primarily from experiential evidence. However, I suspect we do give in too quickly to pain and sin and even death. We do have a King who has already won those victories. The Kingdom is still coming in all the fullness of revelation, yes, but it is already here and now.

Is there any area in our lives in which we have not allowed Jesus to have full victory? Is there anything we're trying to shelter from his reach? It is pointless and fruitless to do so, but we do it in our pride.

Let's allow the Lord to come fully in, to reign without restriction, to command us utterly.

The Meal
Foods served at Passover in Jesus' time:

Lamb - eaten roasted or in a thick stew with vegetables
Unleavened bread - flat loaves made of wheat or barley flour, salt and water
Wine - Four glassesof wine mixed with water drunk to represent the four phases of redemption of Exodus 6:6-7
Bitter Herbs - Represented the cruel bondage in Egypt. They included onions, garlic, radishes and peppers

Foods included after Jesus' time:

Haroseth - Made to resemble the mud mortar of Egyption bondage, it contains ground apples, raisins, figs, nuts and honey
Baked Eggs - Among the many traditions is that they were an ancient symbol of suffering
Parsley & Salt water - The rabbis taught that the salty water represents the tears of the angels for the Egyptians who drowned in the Red Sea

"Jesus ate this passover meal on His last night with His disciples. He said: "I have eagerly desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfilment in the Kingdom of God...I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the Kingdom of God comes. ...You are those who have stood by Me in My trials. During the meal, a child asks questions of their Father

"Why did the Lamb have to die?"
"Because we are helpless to save ourselves from sin and death, God must punish sin, but if we trust in His Lamb, we will be spared and will be brought out of this world into the everlasting Kingdom of God.

"Father, why are we keeping the Passover when so many Christians do not?"
"It is not because it is any better or more righteous for us to do so. It is simply that we want to learn how Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament, and gave us a New covenant in His own blood. By understanding the Old, we can better understand what is ours now. We do it to help break down the wall of hostility between the Jew and Gentiles as Ephesians 2 talks about. By keeping Passover, we honour our roots, because, as the Bible says, 'salvation is from the Jews'. Besides, it is a fun way to learn!"

Pray the Bible yesterday morning was all about love. Literally. Meghan had us pray the love chapter from 1 Corinthians 13 and get this - she sent us on the streets! Hardcore! By praying on the streets not only were we praying God's word back to Him, not only were we declaring love (and God, since God is love) on the streets - but could speak love into our neighbours lives (which fits well with our Street Combat word from last night).

I heard of good fruit from this. I even heard of one guy handing over his crack (along with the pipe) and choosing life, accepting the love he was being given. The love that had been prayed through the streets last night and continued to this morning.

Love never fails!

Love hard today.

Today - was about love too, in a different kind of way. Reconciliation (which when it comes down to it - really is pure love)

I reckon whenever we reconcile with one another we reconcile with the Lord, for I don't think we are right with the Lord if we are not right with a brother or sister.

Here are the scriptures from today:

We opened with the classic Matthew 5:23-24 reconciliation verse (if you are giving a gift at the alter, and remember you have something against your brother, leave the gift and go and be reconciled....) and we were encouraged not to continue without the Lords approval (as we should in all things). There was great testimony of Father-Daughter reconciliation.

Tonight on Street Combat (Evangelism and Prayer) we were sent out to love extravagantly and to look for prodigals. Jesus loves extravagantly, he gave his life - cant get more extravagant then that!

So a few of us were at Pigeon Park which tonight was full of drug deals, violence, and despair. One girls hat was on fire and everyone I looked at was either buying crack, smoking crack or had a crack pipe in their hands.

I felt so out of place. I felt awkward to approach anyone and uncomfortable praying. It felt off to stay and equally off to leave. We then decided to simply sit on a bench. Then a bunch of people came and approached us mostly asking if we were lost, or why we were here. One person stuck out to us, her name was Micky.

She came to us and asked why we were here and was shocked to find out we lived here. She said it would be nice if we lived in a nice home, being young and clean as we were. We told her that it would be nice if she was in a nice home too and her smile revealed her soul. Micky also shared with us that she knows the Lord and goes to Church but knows she isn't living right. After she asked us why we were down here we reversed the question. She said she was going to get the last of her money ripped off and go home. After asking where home was, we encouraged her to go home. (Prodigal). She said she would, just wanted to find her friend. It was getting time for us to go, so we got up, and Micky was in front of us walking down an alley. We should follow her, you know, cuz Jesus would, that would be extravagant. So while two of us prayed the other followed her down the alley (we thought that it would be rather intimidating for us all to follow). This alley was filled with darkness and death. A dead rat at the entrance, three or four people huddled in back doorways injecting, and Micky up ahead. After talking to Micky, hugging her and her dealer and exchanging contact info we headed off.

Did Micky score some dope? I don't know. Did she go home? I don't know. Was she extravagantly loved? Yes.

And Love Never Fails. So go out, extravagantly love all you can. Find the prodigals and call them home.

PTB In the Garden

We prayed and sang some Psalms today, the ones I can remember are 8, 24, 29, 34, 46, 47. Lots of stirring stuff in there about exalting and magnifying the LORD of creation.

It was great to have 6 kids there as well, and lots of visitors in and out as we gardened and painted.

The garden is really coming together. People are very moved by the recreation that is happening, and even starting to get worried that the owners will destroy what we are doing by building a condo on the spot.

One of the candidates to be the next Mayor of Vancouver showed up today as well to take a look. Pray for our city, for good governance, for a care for the poor, for the proper enforcement of good laws and the repealing of bad laws.

This morning we prayed for our enemies. When Jesus talks about this (Matthew 5:44) I wonder what does he mean by enemy? So I looked it up in the concordance and the greek means: hate, act hostile, hostility, foe, enemy. So praying for our enemies doesnt nessesarily mean praying for those who extremely hate us or visa verse...it is as simple as praying for those in whom we are hostile with, or they to us. So although we may not have 'enemies' (as the english languages defines) we do need to be praying for those who act hostile - which I think is generally at least one person for most people.

Anyways, today we prayed for our enemies. Mostly the Apostolic prayers found in the New Testiment, but a few others added in.

Yesterday at PTB we focused on Jesus' high priestly prayer from John 17. There is clearly a lot in there to meditate on and be challenged by, but yesterday I was struck by Jesus' talk about "glory". When Jesus speaks about being "glorified" he is referring at least in part to his crucifixion. So he thanks his Father for his glorification / crucifixion, and prays that the Father would also be glorified by it.

Jesus also prays that we his followers might receive his glory, which again, referring to crucifixion, is kind of a scary thing. But if we want a share in Christ's glory, we must also share in his suffering.

What does that look like, here and now?
